What Are the Limitations of Drone Inspection at Chemical Plants and Refineries?

The honest answer starts with what's outside current capability: internal, confined-space inspection (inside tanks, vessels, or process equipment) requires specialized equipment that isn't part of a standard exterior-focused drone fleet, and dedicated gas leak detection requires optical gas imaging, which many drone operators, including us, don't currently have confirmed in their sensor package. What drone inspection does well at a chemical plant or refinery is exterior and elevated structural inspection, and that's a genuinely valuable, safety-improving capability in its own right, separate from those two specific gaps.
What Drone Inspection Covers at Refineries and Chemical Plants
Drones can inspect flare stacks, elevated pipe racks, structural steel, and other elevated infrastructure from a safe standoff distance, without the scaffolding or rope-access mobilization those inspections traditionally require. Radiometric thermal imaging can identify abnormal heat signatures on exterior equipment, aboveground piping, and electrical infrastructure. Storage tank exteriors can be inspected for visible corrosion, coating failure, or structural issues. All of this happens without shutting down operations or requiring a technician to work at height or in close proximity to hazardous equipment.
Why the Confined-Space and Gas Detection Gaps Matter
Confined-space internal inspection, the interior of a tank, vessel, or enclosed process unit, requires different specialized equipment (and often different regulatory and safety protocols) than exterior aerial inspection provides. Similarly, detecting an actual gas leak requires optical gas imaging, a specialized thermal sensor tuned to hydrocarbon gas signatures specifically, which is different equipment than general radiometric thermal used for equipment fault detection. A facility evaluating drone inspection for either of these specific needs should confirm directly whether that capability is actually part of the offering, rather than assuming general "drone inspection" covers everything.
Limitations
Beyond the two gaps above: thermal and visual findings from an exterior inspection are indicators for further investigation, not standalone diagnoses, confirming the cause of a detected anomaly typically requires a closer look by qualified personnel. Elevated and exterior structural conditions can be documented thoroughly, but assessing internal process integrity, wall thickness, or material condition requires the non-destructive testing methods a refinery's existing inspection program already uses. And site-specific hazardous-area and security protocols at a chemical plant or refinery often add planning requirements beyond standard drone operating rules.
