Why annual is the floor, not the ceiling
Annual thermal inspection is generally considered the minimum standard for utility-scale installations, below that interval, undetected hotspots and micro-cracks have enough time to meaningfully erode annual output before anyone catches them. But "minimum acceptable" is a different bar than "optimal for this specific site," and treating every site the same regardless of scale or risk profile leaves value on the table for the sites where more frequent monitoring would actually pay for itself.
Where quarterly inspection becomes the better answer
Quarterly inspection is recommended for farms above 20 MW, or for sites with a known history of quality issues. The logic here mirrors how well-designed inspection programs work across other asset classes: inspection frequency should scale with consequence. A larger site has more absolute megawatts exposed to undetected loss for every month between inspections, and a site with a documented history of defects has already demonstrated it needs closer attention than a site with a clean track record.

A site that's had documented quality issues, installation defects, manufacturing batch problems, a history of hotspot findings, has already shown it doesn't behave like an average site. Treating it on the same annual cadence as a problem-free site of similar size ignores information you already have. The right cadence for that site is informed by its actual track record, not just its megawatt count.
What determines whether more frequent inspection actually pays off
The question isn't "would more frequent inspection catch more", more frequent inspection almost always catches more, by definition. The real question is whether the additional inspections cost less than the value of the additional defects they catch. For larger sites, where a single undetected fault affects more total capacity, that math tips toward more frequent inspection faster than it does for a small site where the same fault affects a smaller absolute share of production.
