Above Water, Below Water: Two Different Inspection Problems for Ports

"Marine infrastructure inspection" isn't one service. A quay wall's exterior and a pier's submerged foundation are genuinely different technical problems, requiring different equipment, and a facility planning an inspection program needs to know which one it's actually solving before hiring anyone.
What aerial drones handle well
Aerial platforms cover the above-water and above-surface portions of marine infrastructure, quay walls, cranes, decks, superstructures, and the sections of piers and pilings visible during a low-tide window. This is where the bulk of routine structural and mechanical inspection needs actually sit, and where the biggest efficiency gains over scaffolding, rope access, and manned inspection crews get realized.
What aerial drones don't handle
Underwater hull and submerged structure inspection, below the waterline, beneath the reach of even a well-timed low-tide flight, is a genuinely different discipline, typically requiring underwater ROVs (remotely operated vehicles) rather than aerial platforms. No amount of clever tidal timing extends an aerial drone's reach beneath the water's surface; that's simply outside what the technology does.
Why this distinction matters practically
A facility assuming "drone inspection" covers everything from crane condition to submerged pile corrosion is setting up for a scope gap. The two categories of work typically require different equipment, different specialized providers, and sometimes different regulatory considerations, treating them as a single undifferentiated service can mean a program that thoroughly covers the visible structure while leaving the submerged portions genuinely uninspected.
What this means when evaluating a provider
Ask directly: does your service cover above-water condition assessment, underwater inspection, or both? A provider offering excellent aerial inspection isn't necessarily equipped for underwater ROV work, and vice versa, the honest answer from a credible provider should be clear about which category their capability actually falls into, rather than implying comprehensive coverage that spans both.
Why most facility-wide programs are still built around the above-water category
The majority of a port or marine facility's routine inspection needs, cranes, quay wall exteriors, deck and superstructure condition, thermal leak detection, fall into the above-water category, which is also where aerial inspection delivers its most dramatic time and cost advantages over traditional access methods. Underwater needs are typically a smaller, more specialized subset, addressed on their own terms rather than folded into a standard aerial inspection program.

Before committing to a marine inspection program, be explicit about which category of problem is actually being solved, above-water aerial inspection covers the majority of routine needs and delivers the bulk of the documented efficiency gains, while underwater work is a distinct capability requiring its own specialized sourcing.
