Why Surveying an Active Pit Doesn't Have to Mean Shutting It Down

Ground-based survey crews measuring stockpiles or mapping pit terrain have to physically walk the site, which on an active mine usually means either working around ongoing extraction and hauling or pausing operations while the survey happens. For a pit producing $5,000 to $20,000 or more per hour in material value, that pause is a direct, measurable revenue loss, not a hidden cost, a visible one on the day's production report.


Why this cost gets overlooked

The survey fee itself is usually a modest, budgeted line item. The production loss from pausing an active pit to conduct that survey safely almost never gets attributed back to the survey, it just shows up as a slower production day, disconnected in most reporting from the decision to run a ground survey that required clearing the area first.

A drone operating 60-100 metres above an active site can capture complete volumetric and terrain data while extraction, hauling, and processing continue uninterrupted below. That's a categorically different proposition than "a faster ground survey", it's a survey method that doesn't require choosing between getting the data and keeping the pit running.
