External vs. Confined-Space Inspection: Two Different Problems, Two Different Drones

"Drone inspection" isn't one single service. A facility asking a provider to inspect a tank, vessel, or enclosed space needs to know whether they're asking for external condition assessment or internal confined-space entry, because those are genuinely different technical problems, solved with genuinely different equipment.
Why this distinction actually matters
External inspection, the exterior shell of a tank, the outside of a stack, visible conveyor and structural condition, is well suited to open-rotor enterprise drones flying above and around the structure. These platforms are built for outdoor, GPS-available flight, and they're what most facility-wide inspection programs are actually built around.
Inspecting the interior of a tank, vessel, or other enclosed space is a different problem entirely. That environment is GPS-denied, physically confined, and often requires a collision-tolerant, caged drone platform specifically designed to operate safely in tight enclosed spaces without the positioning technology external drones rely on. An open-rotor platform built for outdoor facility surveys isn't designed for that environment, and using the wrong tool for the job isn't just ineffective, it can be genuinely unsafe.
What this means when evaluating a provider
A provider who offers comprehensive "drone inspection services" isn't necessarily equipped for both categories, and a facility evaluating options should ask directly: is this external condition assessment, internal confined-space entry, or both? A provider without the specialized confined-space platform shouldn't be assumed to offer that capability just because they do excellent external inspection work, the two require different equipment, different training, and often different regulatory considerations entirely.
Why most facility-wide programs are built around external inspection
The majority of a facility's inspection needs, tank exteriors, stack condition, conveyor structures, roof condition, facility-wide thermal surveys, fall into the external category, which is also where the biggest cost and safety gains over scaffolding and rope access are realized. Internal confined-space needs are typically a smaller, more specialized subset of a facility's total inspection requirements, addressed separately when they arise rather than folded into a standard external inspection program.

Before committing to any inspection program, be explicit about which category of problem you're solving, external condition assessment covers the majority of routine facility inspection needs and delivers the bulk of the documented cost and safety benefits, while internal confined-space work is a distinct capability that should be sourced and evaluated on its own terms.
