Cost savings get most of the attention when comparing drone-based inspection to scaffolding or rope access. The safety benefit is just as real, and arguably more important, it's just harder to put a single dollar figure on.
The risk that has nothing to do with what's being inspected
Work-at-height inspection carries a fall risk that exists independent of whatever the inspection actually finds. A structurally sound tank inspected via scaffolding still exposes the inspection crew to the same climbing and access risk as a genuinely deteriorating one, the hazard is inherent to the access method, not the asset's condition.
Removing personnel from that access method removes the risk entirely, not just reduces it. A drone-based external inspection means nobody climbs the structure at all for the inspection itself, regardless of what condition it turns out to be in.
Why this matters beyond the individual inspection
An inspection program that itself introduces a safety incident is a poor trade, no matter how good the resulting data is. Facilities that have historically under-inspected specifically because scaffolding access was expensive and risky have effectively been accepting one risk (undetected deterioration) partly to avoid mobilizing another (work-at-height exposure) as often as ideal. A facility that can point to a real reduction in work-at-height inspection exposure has a different conversation with its insurer than one whose inspection program hasn't changed, the reduced exposure is verifiable and documented, not an assumption.
Why this doesn't show up cleanly on a cost-savings spreadsheet
The direct cost savings from drone inspection versus scaffolding are easy to quantify and easy to put in a business case. The safety benefit is real but harder to monetize directly, it shows up as an avoided incident that, by definition, doesn't happen and therefore doesn't generate a line item to point to. That makes it easy to underweight in a purely financial comparison, even though it's arguably the more important of the two benefits.
The practical takeaway
