What Is a Digital Twin and How Is It Created Using Drones?

A digital twin is a georeferenced 3D digital model of a physical asset or site, built from real captured data, that can be updated over time to reflect actual current conditions rather than staying frozen at the moment it was first created. Drones create digital twins by combining LiDAR point cloud data and photogrammetry-derived imagery into a single, accurate, visually detailed 3D model tied to real-world coordinates.


How a Digital Twin Is Created

A drone survey captures LiDAR point cloud data for precise geometry and photogrammetry-derived imagery for visual, photorealistic surface detail. Those two datasets get processed and fused into a single georeferenced 3D model, accurate in its measurements, visually detailed in its appearance, and tied to real-world coordinates so it can be used for measurement, planning, and comparison against future surveys of the same asset. Unlike a one-time 3D scan, a digital twin is designed to be revisited: repeat surveys can update the model over time, turning it into a living record rather than a static snapshot.


Why It Matters

A digital twin supports ongoing decisions in a way a one-off deliverable doesn't, comparing a current survey against a baseline model to track change, using the model for planning and design work without needing to remeasure the physical site, or maintaining an accurate current record of a large or complex asset that would otherwise require repeated manual surveys. The value compounds over time as the model gets updated and the comparison history builds.


Limitations

A digital twin is only as current as its most recent update, an asset that changes between surveys (construction progress, equipment changes, structural modification) won't be reflected in the model until the next capture. The level of detail and accuracy in a digital twin should be scoped to what it's actually being used for; a model built for general facility planning doesn't need the same precision as one supporting engineering-grade measurement. And a digital twin is a data model, not a certified engineering deliverable on its own — where a legal or regulatory determination is needed, that still requires review and sign-off from the relevant licensed professional.
